Event Description

This next phase is occupying neighborhoods and local communities to radicalize spaces that serve as the basis for revolutionary transformative change. These radical spaces are the economic, social, political and cultural foundation building blocks for a viable alternatives to the current corporatist system. They also serve as the anchors for the person to person social connections that drive the revolution. These radical spaces provide the requisite means for people to meet their most basic needs, food, medical care, work (not wage slavery), self-government and solidarity. They are the radical places where people can take responsibility for their futures and begin to solve their problems by horizontal direct action rather than having solutions imposed from above.

And this is where the food movement fits in. Locavores, organic food, the micro-economies of vegan and vegetarian cooking, farmers’ markets, urban and community gardens as well as the garden in your own back yard are the foundation building blocks – the radical spaces – of the new revolution. Until September 17th, they were just pieces of an as yet undefined “something bigger” – an alternative that was but a shadow on the wall of the corporate cave. The Occupy Together movement has given them a radical framework and a new meaning as part of a tangible, practical real-world alternative. These radical spaces provide a focal point for people to address the current inequality, injustice and disempowering despair that relies on the 1%’s political lackeys – rather than taking direct action together – to stop the relentless destruction of the life-support systems of the planet as well as our human need economies, society and culture.

The future of occupy food together is moving the food tents from the encampments into the world. It is recognizing that everyone involved in the “food movement” is part of this uprising that is transforming the way humans live on this planet. Building a new economic system where people are not dependent on big multinational corporations for their basic human needs is the most fundamental aspect of the revolution. Having the people who produce the food also consuming and voluntarily share that food is the desired outcome. Once there are viable alternatives to the present corrupt and rotten system, it will no longer need “reform” or “tearing down” because it will wither away.
